FAQ
Are there any rules?
The first rule of hack club is, we don’t just talk about code!
What will we do?
Whatever the group wants as long as it works toward the goal and isn’t against the law. We can identify common interests and pursue learning them with our fingers on the keyboard. (kata, reference implementation, etc…)
BDD
We practice writing code using BDD, Behavior Driven Development. BDD is the evolutionary successor of TDD, Test Driven Development.
Kata
Frequently we make use of code kata. Kata is a term borrowed from martial arts. A kata is something you do over and over again to practice mastery of a skill.
Are we all going to hack the same bits?
If the group is diverse in interests, we can subdivide and pursue different bits.
Do I need a laptop?
It’s recommended but not required. We have a limited number of desktop computers for use. However, there is no guarantee any specific software will be installed.
What language will we use? (Java, C#, Ruby, etc…)
Yes…. We believe in the value of practice within a variety of development ecosystems. It makes us better developers even if we never switch sides professionally.
Are we going to have presentations?
No, but we may use a projector to share code with the group.
Why are you starting this group now?
To try something different and practice some of the principles of the software craftsmanship manifesto.
Is it free?
As in beer.
Will there be beer?
The Improving office now has a kegerator with Shiner Bock and Ziegenbock rotating. Sodas and water are also available.
Is there free food?
Yes, food is provided, usually pizza, sometimes sandwiches.
